Fred Perry is a brand born from the idea of the eponymous tennis player and his Austrian friend Tibby Wegner. Initially, Perry proposed a pipe as the logo, reflecting his love for smoking, but Wegner persuaded him otherwise, noting that it might alienate female customers. Instead, they chose the elegant laurel wreath, symbolizing class and sophistication. This logo, reminiscent of the Wimbledon tournament where Perry triumphed three times, was surprisingly approved by the All England Club despite their strained relationship with Perry. Fred Perry introduced the first polo shirt, made of breathable piqué cotton with a collar and three buttons, merging the elegance of shirts beloved in tennis with new comfort. In the 1960s, the brand peaked, becoming a staple of the “mod” youth movement. The laurel wreath, a symbol of victory, continues to bring success to the Fred Perry clothing line.
